Nice one!)

Adrienne Dye replied:

Thanks so much! I wanted it to have a rich texture of the forest floor which was littered with leaves and of course the leaf itself. There were thousands of them.

Artist's Description

During one of my hikes in the Smokies, this was one of the first early Spring bloomers. Here I found them growing in the dappled sunlight of the woods among the leaf litter from the previous Fall season. The solitary flower of the Bloodroot plant is white and blooms high on a single stalk well above its very large scalloped leaf. Flowers have anywhere from 8 to 12 petals. An interesting fun fact is they get their name from the dark red sap found in the stems and roots, which resembles blood. The colored juice from the stems of bloodroot plants can also be used to make red, pink and orange dyes. Folk medicine using bloodroot plants was widespread in centuries past but is now either lost or seldom used.
